It was back to school for our very own soot-busting sweep Peter this week after passed his Guild exams with flying colours.
Peter, who start helping out as an assistant, has now climbed the ladder to become a fully registered member of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.
As part of his training, he undertook classroom-based learning, a practical assessment and two written exams.
He was assessed down in Norfolk this week by Guild director and long-standing professional sweep Gavin Cater.
Peter’s entry to the world of registered, professional sweeping represents something of a full circle for him.
His grandfather was a local coalman in the Swinley area of Wigan and was captured in this photo with him holding the horse.
He lived at Marriebone for a while before moving to a farm off Wigan Lane, which also doubled as his coal yard.
Mr Soot company owner David, who has been mentoring Peter, said: “We are absolutely over the moon. Peter has worked incredibly hard over a long period of time, and thoroughly deserves his success.
“He has already proved to be an invaluable member of the Mr Soot team. His thoroughness, dedication and high standards are plain for all to see.
“At Mr Soot, we are always on the lookout for positive-minded, focused people with a professional, can-do ethos, and we hope to make further announcements soon.”
Following his assessment, Peter had the opportunity to be personally congratulated by Lawson Wight, chairman of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.
Lawson said: “I’m delighted to welcome Peter to the Guild. He has worked hard and the feedback from his trainers has been first class. I’m sure he has a great future in the industry and we all wish him well.
“It’s also great to see Mr Soot Chimney Sweep growing as a company. I remember David when he first came down to shadow me as a trainee a good few years ago now. It was clear even back then that he was someone who had ambitious plans for both his own business and the industry at large.
“Soon afterwards, we jointly launched the Burnright campaign, which remains the go-to website for sweeps and industry professionals who want to educate customers on how to use their appliances correctly.
“Alongside side this, he has worked hard to continue learning and grow the Mr Soot brand.
“The Guild has a number of members who started out as ‘one person bands’ and have gone on to grow their businesses.
“In a sense, that’s not surprising. At the Guild, we foster a spirit of mutual co-operation, support and entrepreneurship for those who want to take their business to the next stage.
“It’s very gratifying to see, and I wish David, Peter and the Mr Soot team all the very best for the future.”
