Wigan declared the WORST area for chimney fires in Greater Manchester

The devastating effects of chimney fires are well known. Danger to life, risk to property, maybe even the inconvenience of having to temporarily move home.

And yet it seems many Wiganers haven’t heeded the advice to get their chimney swept regularly.

Because today I can reveal that Wigan as an area is the WORST in Greater Manchester for chimney fires.

Statistics I obtained from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service under the Freedom of Information Act show that, between 2009-2019, there have been 430 recorded incidents across Greater Manchester.

In that decade, Wigan had the most incidents at 76 – and 13 of these took place last year alone.

Both Stockport and Oldham were in joint second place, with 58 incidents each in the past decade. Salford had the fewest at just 26.

The full details were:

1st – Wigan (76)

2nd – Stockport and Oldham (58 each)

3rd – Tameside (48)

4th – Bolton (38)

5th – Trafford (34)

6th – Rochdale (32)

7th – Manchester and Bury (30 each)

8th – Salford (26)

Although these figures are shocking, given that chimney fires are largely completely avoidable, they actually only tell part of the story.

The reason I know is because I go to many new customers each year and it’s clear they’ve had a chimney fire to some degree, but they were completely unaware they’d had one.

Others may have known they’d had a chimney fire but didn’t call the fire brigade out.

So when you factor this in, the real figures could be closer to 1,000.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?

The good news however is that chimney fires are largely avoidable. A minimum of one sweep per year will help ensure your chimney stays as safe as possible.

New Year to spring is the most common time of year for chimney fires, so the time to act is now.

Having your chimney sweep means that the byproducts of combustion – soot, tars etc – are taken out of the flue. These are the substances which cause chimney fires. So the less of it in your flue – whether it is lined or not – the safer it becomes.

I also offer useful hints and tips on how to save money and get the best out of your fireplace, including what fuels to use.

Chimney fires can reach up to 2,100F, meaning it will at best render your chimney unusable and leave you with an expensive repair bill.

Don’t become a Wigan chimney fire statistic – book your sweep today.
