‘A place for like-minded professionals’
Mr Soot owner David has launched a brand new online industry resource.
The United Professional Chimney Sweeps Forum aims to bring together sweeps from across both the country and the world to share hints, tips and stories.
The forum has already attracted over 150 members in its first week – although David stressed they are aiming for “quality not quantity”.
“I set up this group after being approached by a number of people over the last few months, who want a place online where professional sweeps of all affiliations and none can share hints, tips and discuss industry matters in a robust yet friendly and respectful way.
“They want to enjoy social media interaction with like-minded professionals, and use it as a learning resource for not just the mechanics of the job, but also the business and admin end as well.
“There are many sweep forums out there, and they each serve a function. Our mission is to bring together the best of the industry into once place – hence the name!”
David, who is a co-founder of the grassroots consumer campaign Burnright and is a Business Mentor for The Growth Hub, says the rules of the forum have been the main attraction for many sweeps.
“We have set our stall out right at the beginning with a clearly defined set of group rules. Each and every member, including admins and moderators, will be held to them.
“For instance, we have made it clear that we do not believe in scattergun censorship. Admins and moderators are expected to be able to put aside their own views when undertaking their duties, as should anyone when they are undertaking a professional role.
“Also, some trade and business groups can become a bit ‘cliquey’ and that can very off-putting to the silent majority. As a result, fewer and fewer people engage and are afraid of asking genuine questions.
“If that happens, we’d consider it a failure as we want everyone – whether they are a newbie or a time-served sweep – to enjoy being a member of this group, and find it a useful resource.”
